ABOUT 10650

Hi! We’re team 10650, Hazmat Robotics: Biohazards Division. We are a fifth year team from Lake Highland Preparatory School in downtown Orlando, FL. We are coached by our school’s robotics teacher, Mr. Glynn Dettman, who is a great help to us, but allows us to figure out difficult problems as a team, without the help of a coach. Our team is split into three main sub-teams: building, programming, and business. Although we do split up into these different groups, we find it is very important to work together as one team and one family. We value helping the community, running similarly to a small business, team spirit, team organization, gracious professionalism, and letting anybody join that team no matter what their interests may be. We make sure to recruit anybody who wants to join the team even if they may not be interested in engineering particularly. Our school actually began with only one team, but due to the sharp increase in interest in robotics, our coach created 10650, several VEX teams, a Lockheed Martin team, and a SeaPerch team. Our team is also affiliated with #FIRSTLikeAGirl. We believe that women should be involved in STEM as much as possible and should have the opportunity to pursue their interests in STEM related fields without having to go through unnecessary obstacles. Our team consists of 15 hard working high schoolers who all love what we’re doing. We’ve made team spirit a large part of our team this year by bringing a Hazmat mascot to every competition as well as wearing matching purple pajama pants! We enjoy having fun at all times and want others to have fun too, which is why we try to be as helpful as possible with other teams at competitions. Gracious professionalism is a huge part of our team. As well as helping at competitions, we believe it is important to give back to our community. This is why we work with Go Baby Go! regularly and do other things to help out others. From the outside, we may just seem like any other team, but we really see ourselves as a family. We are all close friends and share a special bond that will last a lifetime.
