ABOUT TEAM 9277
The Explosives love to connect with the community around us and spread STEM wherever we go. This takes the form of outreach events like our lessons in India and our planned visits to the Orlando Science Center and Give Kids the World. The main theme of our outreach this year is to educate and inspire those younger than us so that they begin to foster a love for STEM. Hopefully one day that love pushes them to join a FIRST team or even a STEM field professionally. These events allow us to build a personal rapport with the community as well as give us a way to brighten someone’s day.
Hazmat Robotics 9277 has revolutionized our design, with a catchy metallic finish and custom ABS elements. This year, we decided to keep it as simple as possible while also considering a variety of designs. We comprised results from both our design matrix and prototypes to decide our final design– a sleek robot held together by two metallic panels. Our design elements are the results of hours of thought, yet are still designed to be as minimalistic as possible. We are all excited to see our robot’s performance this year!
Our innovative thinking extends to the programming aspects of our robot as well. We created our own custom vision system to tackle the issue of variable lighting, which we use to accurately detect where the skystone is. Next, we tackled the challenge of navigating accurately by controlling our motors with our custom PID provider. We also have an array of sensors that help the robot maneuver through its environment such as the gyro, encoder, and the phone’s camera.
With all of our challenges and triumphs alike, there is nothing we love more than to share our knowledge with the community around us. One of our favorites ways to do this is through our annual homecoming drink sale/robot demo. This sense of community also extends to helping other teams and spreading our image and the FIRST ideals to all the schools we travel to. Although these are just pieces of what makes up our team dynamic, we hope the rest of the notebook will connect these pieces to show Hazmat Explosives as a unified whole!

TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTSTeam 9277: For the first time in the history of Hazmat Robotics team 9277 has qualified for super regional tournament in Athens, Georgia. Team Hazmat is extremely proud of this achievement, however there was still much work to be done. Team 9277 prides itself on hard work no matter what, and through our accomplishments, that will not change.
