This semester a subset of the team has been volunteering with our school’s lower schoolers in their Mindstorms academy program. It’s been a great success, that one hour after school is the highlight of some of the kids’ week. Many of the students hadn’t ever touched robotics before, and through the course of the academy they developed and used tons of new skills, including engineering, mathematics, and critical thinking. For many of the kids, this program has opened up a whole new way of thinking about problems, coming at them with the unique mindset of an engineer and a programmer. I personally am amazed at the level of talent these kids were showing at the end of their weeks in the program. We’ve seen firsthand the high demand for robotics and the raw skill that exists in the lower grades of our school, and that has inspired us to make it our goal to help our school provide these kids with as much opportunity to exercise and grow their love for STEM subjects as much as they possibly can. Big things are in the works! I’m so glad that we’ve been able to partner with this club to share our knowledge with a younger generation of future scientists and innovators, and I can’t wait to see the strengthening role that we will hopefully play with our lower school in the future.
