Give Kids the World was very successful with steps being taken to establish a long term relationship. WE brought Vex, NXT, competition robots, and Steve, our human sized robot.Though the competition bots did not run too well. they were a hit with the children. we had a lot of fun and it is definitely an experience we are willing to repeat. We then headed back to practice.

Give Kids the World is a resort that invites terminally ill and disabled kids to come to Orlando and spend some time at theme parks while providing a comfortable home for each family on-site. Each child has used their wish from the Make a Wish Foundation to come to Orlando, and we have had the honor to establish a relationship with Give Kids the World. For the second year now, we have visited the Give Kids the World village with our competition robots and shown the kids how to drive and interact with the robots. Since many of the children have wheelchairs or prosthetics themselves, it is amazing to see the kids loose their fear of the robots (which can at first seem intimidating) and develop a fondness for the robot’s quirky movements. Every visit, we set up simple games like knocking over stacked cups, and have the kids participate. In the morning before breakfast, this is a well received break for parents as they try to juggle medicines and stress that comes as a reality when caring for a terminally ill child. Although we know that our biweekly visits are just a small part of the Give Kids the World experience, we are happy knowing that we gave those families an opportunity to do something fun in the time they have together. Seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces has been the most rewarding experience our team has had as a result of FTC.
